If you are outraged by the gross injustice committed in this case, know that you are not alone. 51 Congressional leaders have taken up this cause by writing letters urging an investigation by Attorney General Eric Holder into the actions of the prosecutors in Iowa, for whom he is ultimately responsible.
Allegations stem from documents revealed from a FOIA lawsuit that the prosecutors had extensive ex-parte secret communications with Judge Linda Reade prior to Mr. Rubashkin’s trial. Leading legal scholars have called it prosecutorial and judicial misconduct. A such, in an unprecedented fashion in any criminal case in Unites States history, 51 U.S. Representatives have called on the Attorney General to investigate the validity of these allegations and take action if they prove to be true. The members of Congress have also called on the Attorney General to investigate Mr. Rubashkin’s draconian 27-year sentence.
To date, 29 Democrats and 22 Republicans have expressed their concern, and 10 of them sit on the Judiciary Committee, which has oversight over the Justice Department. This bi-partisan show of support is as encouraging as it is rare.
